Scope of the Project

The L-Band & S-Band Telemetry Power Amplifier is a passively cooled electronic enclosure in which heat dissipation occurs primarily through natural convection and thermal radiation, without the use of forced cooling mechanisms such as fans. The objective of the CFD analysis is to evaluate the thermal performance of the L-Band & S-Band Telemetry Power Amplifier under extreme ambient temperature conditions of +71°C and −40°C. The analysis aims to assess the temperature distribution within the enclosure, identify potential hotspots, and estimate the operating temperatures of critical electronic components to ensure that they remain within the thermal limits specified by their respective manufacturers. A three-dimensional (3D), steady-state Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis is performed using the specified heat dissipation values for both ambient temperature conditions. The effects of natural convection and thermal radiation are considered to evaluate heat transfer within the enclosure and heat dissipation to the surrounding environment. The analysis also accounts for the thermal interactions between the internal components, printed circuit board (PCB) assemblies, and enclosure structure. Based on the simulation results, the junction and case temperatures of the relevant electronic components are estimated and evaluated against their respective maximum permissible temperature limits. The results are used to verify the adequacy of the proposed mechanical configuration and assess its ability to maintain acceptable operating temperatures under the specified environmental conditions.

CFD mesh

The given CAD model was simplified in accordance with the requirements of the CFD analysis to eliminate unnecessary geometric details while retaining the essential features influencing the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics. This simplification helped reduce the computational complexity without significantly affecting the accuracy of the thermal predictions. Based on the simplified geometry, a CFD mesh comprising approximately 6 million Poly-Hexcore volume cells was generated to ensure adequate spatial resolution and computational efficiency. The mesh quality parameters were maintained within acceptable limits in accordance with established CFD meshing best practices to promote numerical stability and solution accuracy. Furthermore, localized mesh refinement was applied in regions expected to exhibit high thermal gradients, enabling more accurate capture of temperature variations and heat transfer phenomena. This meshing strategy provides a suitable balance between numerical accuracy and computational cost, thereby establishing a reliable foundation for the subsequent CFD thermal analysis.

CFD analysis results: Conclusions

The CFD analysis results indicate that the junction and case temperatures of all components mounted on the different PCB assemblies remain within the maximum temperature limits specified by their respective manufacturers. The thermal performance of the proposed mechanical configuration is satisfactory under both ambient temperature conditions of +71°C and −40°C. The temperature distribution across the PCB assemblies and associated components confirms that the heat generated during operation is adequately dissipated through the proposed thermal management arrangement. No components exceed their specified thermal limits under the evaluated conditions, demonstrating that the design provides satisfactory thermal performance and supports reliable operation across the specified ambient temperature range.
